What does a Doula do?
What does a Doula do?
- Provides emotional and physical support during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum
- Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor
- Assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for birth
- Stays by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire labor
- Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner, and the clinical care providers
My services include all of the following:
* One Free Consultation - This is where we meet up to see how well our styles "click". I usually try to meet somewhere between our two locations and we sit and talk more in depth about what you are looking for in a Doula, and what I can give to you as well. I bring my contract with me that outlines what I do and what I DO NOT do that must be signed to secure your "due week" with me. You may sign it then, or take it home to think about it some more if you like. (I consider myself booked when I receive a signed contract with the retainer fee.)
** 1-2 Prenatal Visits - At prenatal visits, I go to your home and get to know your space and what you want to accomplish during the birth. I help you with making a birth plan and with questions that you might want to go over with your care provider. I learn about what ways of pain management might work best for as well. Depending on when you hire me and how many times I think it is necessary will determine how many visits we will have. I will also bring my Doula bag so you can see ahead of time what I use and what you might want to use later.
*** Constant Labor and Delivery Support -As soon as you even think you are in labor, you call me! When you want me to come to you in labor, I will. I am on call 24/7 and can be reached by phone starting around 37-38 weeks. I will go to your home as you labor, or meet you at your birth place, whichever you prefer. I am with you the entire labor and till an hour or two after delivery. I help with breastfeeding start-up and make sure you are comfortable and taken care of before I leave you.
**** 1 Postpartum Visit - A few days after your delivery, usually a day or two after you are settled at home, I make another home visit. I check to make sure baby is still nursing well and that you are taken care of yourself. Sometimes moms just need a break to take a shower! This is a good time to use me for that purpose.
I also have a personal lending library of books and videos that you are welcome to check out once you hire me.
